The Columbus Zoo and Aquarium said that an adult man was taken to a hospital Thursday afternoon after falling 12 to 15 feet into an area near the Watering Hole in the Heart of Africa.

Just after noon, during the introduction to the Cheetah Run presentation, wildlife encounters staff noticed a teenager in tree behind a protective barrier on the boardwalk. Staff asked the teen to get down.

Witnesses then saw a second guest climb on top of a 3.5-foot handrail and fall. He landed behind a safety barrier in an area without animals, the zoo said.

A three-year-old cheetah, Adrienne, was nearby with her trainer and reportedly took notice of the guest calling for help, but stayed with the trainer and was quickly secured.

The man was conscious when zoo staff and emergency medical teams reached him.

The zoo said as of 3 p.m. Thursday, all areas were open for guests.
