First Look: CVC Girls Golf

The Chagrin Valley Conference’s expansion to 25 teams resulted in a new division being added in girls’ golf.

Here’s an early look at the top returning teams and players in all three divisions.

With the addition of three new schools, the Chagrin Division has been retooled and now includes Cuyahoga Heights, Hawken, Independence, and Lutheran West. Fairview also will compete in this division when the school joins the conference in 2024.

Two-time Division II state champion Ella Wong of Hawken has graduated leaving the door open for another golfer to win Chagrin Division medalist honors for the first time in four years. Wong won four straight league titles.

Independence won the league title while Hawken placed second.

Both the Blue Devils and Hawks qualified for the state tournament as a team and Independence returns the bulk of its roster.

Independence’s Macey McGhee strung together the best round of her season at the CVC postseason tournament. She finished with an 80, just two strokes behind Wong’s 78. Molly McGreal was one of Independence’s top golfers all season. She shot an 84 at the CVC postseason tournament. McGreal has competed at the state tournament in each of her first three seasons of high school golf. She averaged an 88 in her six rounds of state competition. McGhee has competed in two state tournaments with a 94 average in her four rounds. The Blue Devils also return Bel Trombetta, who carded an 88 to finish seventh at the CVC postseason tournament and then shot a 176 in her two rounds at the state tournament.

McGreal earned first-team all-conference honors while Trombetta and McGhee earned second-team honors. Adriann Buyansky was named honorable mention.

Hawken’s top returning golfer is Kate Petersen, who earned a third-place finish at the CVC postseason tournament with an 84 and shot a 165 at the state tournament to finish 14th, two spots ahead of McGreal. Keira Chang placed 10th at the CVC tournament with a 101 and she shot a 210 at the state tournament. Helena Yanchar also returns for the Hawks. She shot a 104 at the CVC postseason tournament to finish 14th and shot a 191 at the state tournament.

Peterson was a first-team All-CVC honoree.

Cuyahoga Heights finished fourth and returns its top golfer Shai Moore, who placed 20th at the postseason tournament with a 111. Lauryn Wilson (22nd, 113), Anna Patterson (23rd, 119), Sarah Glenn (23rd, 119), and Kelia Goines (26th, 128) also return for the Red Wolves.

Lutheran West placed fifth at the CVC postseason tournament last fall and returns three of its top golfers from last fall in Marin Roshkowski (107), Nora Gardner (129), and Isabella Rudnickas (139). ‘

Roshkowski earned second-team All-CVC honors last fall.

The Lake Division is new for 2023 and includes Conneaut, Edgewood, Geneva, Lakeside, and Madison.

Edgewood won the Valley Division last fall but has since graduated Valley Division MVP Kaci Kanicki.

The Warriors do return Annie Johnston, who placed second at the CVC postseason tournament with a 91, Avery Vencill, who placed sixth with a 99, and Zoe Naus, who placed ninth with a 104. Emma Hart-Wood also returns after shooting a 124 at the CVC postseason tournament and a 118 at the sectional. Johnston and Vencill were named first-team All-CVC while Naus was a second-team selection.

Lakeside finished fourth in the postseason tournament and Geneva finished fifth.

The Dragons graduated their top three golfers and Geneva returns all five of its starters.

Chae Wilson-Owens led the Eagles at the postseason tournament with a 121, good for 16th place, and she shot a 133 at the sectional tournament. Alexis Shuttleworth carded a 123 at the postseason tournament and a 127 at the sectional competition. Elizabeth Raymond (123 at the sectional) and Sophia Bell (126 at the sectional) also return for the Eagles. Wilson and Shuttleworth both were named second-team All-CVC and Bell and Raymond were honorable mention selections.

Madison previously competed in the Western Reserve Conference.

Jocelyn Bancroft shot a 96 to place 34th at the Division I Old Avalon sectional while Kylie Caruthers shot a 111 to finish 58th and Ambriel Werling carded a 115 to place 62nd.

After expansion, the Valley Division now includes Berkshire, Chagrin Falls, Orange, and Perry.

Edgewood is the defending postseason tournament champion but has since moved to the Lake Division.

Perry placed second in the Valley Division postseason tournament and returns four of its top five golfers.

Emily Capitosti placed third at the CVC postseason tournament with a 93 and Addy Trefzger was fourth with a 95. Jillian Peters finished 11th with a 111 and Lilah Yeager was 13th with a 117. Peters then fired off a 106 at the sectional tournament. Capitosti and Trefzger earned first-team All-Conference honors while Peters was a second-team selection. Yeager earned honorable mention honors.

Berkshire finished third and returns three of its top five in Aurora Martin, Grace Louden and Ella Klingman. Martin placed eighth at the CVC postseason tournament after shooting a 101. Louden shot a 118 to place 14th and Klingman shot a 118 at the Division II Punderson Sectional. Marting was a first-team All-CVC selection while Louden earned second-team and Klingman was an honorable mention selection.

Chagrin Falls placed third at the Chagrin Division postseason tournament.

The Tigers return Emma O’Brien, who placed ninth with a 100, Ellie Conrad, who placed 12th with a 103, Samantha Holtz, who shot a 105 to finish 16th, and Matilda Fischer, who was 21st with a 112. Holtz and Conrad tied for 31st place at the district tournament with a 99.

O’Brien, Conrad, and Holtz earned second-team All-CVC honors while Fischer was an honorable mention selection.

Orange has moved to the Valley Division from the Chagrin Division. Tessa Kemelhar returns as the Lions’ top golfer after shooting a 108 at the postseason tournament on her way to earning second-team all-conference honors. Alexandra O’Connor also returns after firing off a 131 at the postseason tournament.
